How to plan your career and where to start?
It depends really at what point you are at on the career path that you have chosen. If you are at the beginning and you have a clear vision of what you want to do then the first thing to do is get some qualifications and/or experience.
Do your research.
Find out what qualifications are needed for the career you have in mind. Find out if you meet the necessary requirements to do the course.
- Is a point-based system that depends on leaving cert results? Or is it experienced based? Sometimes it is both.
- Is it apprenticeship based?
- Next find out what courses are available and where they are run. Will you be able to get there by public transport? IF not, then how?
- Fulltime or parttime? Have you got the time for full time education? If you are already working maybe not. Part time might take longer but fit in better with your lifestyle.
- Fees? Can you afford it? Maybe you will have to save for a while. Take out a loan? You may be exempt from paying the fee. This is sometimes the case in adult education centres and for mature students.
- All these things need to be planned. If you have all of this sorted before you begin you are more likely to finish the course and gain your qualification.
- Whatever the requirements are, it is always better to have experience along with qualifications. Practical experience along with relevant qualifications will always give you an edge when looking for employment. Work or volunteer in your chosen career while you are studying if you can.
